Well I don’t know about splitting hairs, but to use your examples with Merriam-Webster:

Pronunciation: ri-’p&-blik

Function: noun

A political order whose head of state is not a monarch and in modern times is usually a president.

A nation that has such a political order.

A political order in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them.

A nation that has such a political order.

often Republic A specific republican government of a nation: the Fourth Republic of France.

An autonomous or partially autonomous political and territorial unit belonging to a sovereign federation.

A group of people working as equals in the same sphere or field: the republic of letters.

If any national assembly can be summed up easily then we wouldn’t be having this discussion.  Look at number four of your definition.  The principles and policies of the Democratic party in the U.S.?  Wouldn’t that mean that the principles and policies of the Republican party would be different?  Just droppin some bytes.

Aaron Russo is just da bomb!  I asks ya. Has any other political candidate won an emmy? Has any other candidate been praised by Bette Midler? ( ?Russo is a born leader.? ? Bette)

Has any other fat man defended the Atkins diet? (?If I could count on only one man to take on the federal government to defend alternative medicine, it would be Aaron Russo? – Dr Robert Atkins 2001).  And most importantly do you know of any other candidate that can wear his hair like that? (besides Al Sharpton)

How can you think that we’re moving towards participatory democracy?  If anything I feel that we’re moving closer to socialism.  Why do we still have the stupid Iowa Caucauses?  The electoral freakin college?  In such sense shouldn’t each and every citizen’s vote in a state of Montana be just as important as the citizens in Texas?  This isn’t the case right now, and I don’t see us moving towards it.
