Not too long ago .alpahmonkey., ShadowStalkr, and I were sitting around at the bar discussing the lost art of ASCII. We had fond memories of days past when naughty bodyparts were drawn with symbols, such as (+) and other similar methods. Well, as it turns out, ASCII art is still HUGE. This site not only has art from the days past, but there are also ASCII versions of some of your favorite movie scenes.Go on and check it out. It’s a cool site, the link goes to the list of movies but there is other good content on the site to take a look at.

That is insane. I can’t be bothered to dot the ‘i’s when I write. I can’t imagine that kind of dedication.

I know, I was looking at it, and I imagine that there either has to be some kind of software that takes video and converts it to ASCII or somebody has way too much time on their hands.

There is indeed software which does this. The aalib output plugin for Xine (on Linux) does ‘full motion ascii’, so I’d imagine it’d be fairly easy to divert this to a bunch of files.

yeah, it’s not very DETAILED it’s just effective on a large enough scale. pretty much every pixel of lowest value (brightness wise) is S, and then C, etc, etc…

I present to you, TextMedia!! (from here)

This is a program that sits on the end of your Windows movie chain and renders the video as ascii.  So anything you can play in Media Player you can see in bright shining text!
