T.V. commercial director, Paul Papanek, had used Coke products in his spec commercials a few years ago and finds letters in his mail box today from Coke’s in-house and out-of-house legal council.

From Paul’s site:

To make a long story short, the Coca Cola Company is threatening to sue me over copyright infringement because I directed 2 spec commercials ‘advertising’ their product. I might add,at this point, that the spots are very pro-Coke, and not parody at all. Why they’ve chosen me is a mystery. There must be hundreds of other spec spots for Coke floating around.

Along with being a T.V. Commercial Director Paul is an accomplished photographer. Be sure to take a gander at his places and people photography.

Even though they’re great spots, they aren’t in line with Coke’s brand message.  Unlike apple’s iPod, there is no need for consumer-led viral marketing of Coke.  I understand why they’re threatening Paul.  That train one is quite good though.

Spec commercials are the long established means in which lesser known or fledgling directors can show how they work.  Companies understand that.  I think the problem in this case is that he’s made them publicly available, which is not the norm.
