America: How Dumb Are We?

Pretty dumb, apparently. According to a recent study by the Center for Biomedical Communication, only 20 to 25% of Americans are scientifically savvy and alert.

So what’s that mean exactly?  It means that one adult in five thinks that the Sun revolves around the Earth.  Welcome to the 21st century, folks.  Only 10% know what radiation is, and fewer than a third know that DNA is a major factor in heredity.

Way to go, America! With any luck we’ll soon be able to outsmart the average citizen of the 17th century!

“It means that one adult in five thinks that the Sun revolves around the Earth.”

Is there any study that talks about reading comprehension???

Nice insult, except that those sets of numbers apply to different groups of people.  RTFA.

I think those are the same people who know all the phish song lyrics and lead-ins. it’s odd being around people who can have that kind of savvy and yet they can’t freaking do anything else.

but I guess we are savants in our own way…

To be fair, zero thirds of 17th-centurians knew that DNA played a role in husbandry.  So we beat them in one thing.
