If you were to dig a hole in your front yard through the Earth, where would you end up?

Thanks to this nifty application, I know I would end up drowning in the Indian Ocean.

I guess I’d better put the shovel away, huh?

Thanks to Heretique for the link!

Huh. I ended up in the Indian Ocean too. I don’t think Americans should undertake this dig without checking this first.

apparently, if you live in hawaii, you’ll end up in botswana.

Only people in Southern South America can dig a hole to China.

Which means I will be moving there as soon as possible.

UK diggers drown SE of New Zealand blank stare

Yet if you start just off the coast of New Zealand you’ll be drinking in Portugal by nightfall (assuming you dig quickly).

I think whoever programmed the map was smoking something.

    What do you mean?

I meant that, if you think about it, some of the places where you end up are rather off… It just doesn’t seem like EVERYONE in the USA would end up in the Indian ocean.  I guess I’d have to see it on a globe or something to belive it.

I agree, it does seem counterintuitive.  I believe it because I understand that it just makes a line from the selected point through the center of the earth and sees where it intersects on the other side, but it would be nice to have a hollow globe and some string (and hands that work in four dimensions) to get a physical feel for what’s going on.

that would be a good project as a followup for this entry, if the monkeyman would allow it.

I just noticed the ‘Big Dig’ title. How apropos MCF!
