Wolfram Tones

Stephen Wolfram wrote a book back in 2002 called A New Kind of Science that is widely expected to open up new pathways in many branches of science.  It’s a tough read in parts, but a very interesting look at cellular automata – basically small, independent, unintelligent entities that react according to predefined rules and combine to create some amazing patterns.

On the Wolfram Tones website, you can apply this science to create your own music.  You set the rules that are applied to the automata, and the music creates itself for you – music that is completely your creation, and often turns out better than half the crap you hear on the radio nowadays.  Oh yeah, and piss off your friends by downloading your tune to your cellphone!
