Johnny Cash: The Legend

Personally I’m wary as all hell over the new Johnny Cash biopic, “Walk the Line”. The casting of Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon as Johnny and June scares me as it is, but the fact that they do all the singing in the film scares me even more. Cash had one of the most iconic voices in American music. Why a director would want to neglect that is beyond me. A telling quote (paraphrased) from the director was ‘if you want to hear Cash sing, buy a CD’.

Anyway, for those of you who want a little less Hollywood glamour with your Man in Black, the Public Radio Exchange has available their 4 part series on Johnny Cash called, appropriately enough, Johnny Cash: The Legend.

He weren’t no Hollywood pretty-boy, that’s for sure.

4 hours on the life and times of Johnny Cash, all at your internet-connected fingers.  How awesome is that?

We’re listening to this at work today.  It’s pretty sweet.

I remember the day he died and the day he was laid to rest… I was in Downtown Nashville trying to get to my hubby from work and the procession went down Broadway toward the river… It was both sad and amazing at the same time to see all of the people following his hurse and how many people stood on the sidewalks and removed their hats as a sign of compassion.  On the news they kept saying that there were well over 1500 people at the funeral and more outside the cemetary leaving flowers and gifts for him.  He truely was a legend.  For months, there was a Johnny Cash mural painted on one of the buildings facing the old OpryHouse to honor him.  I used to have that picture on my Computer at work.

I’ve been listening to the newly released “Legend of Johnny Cash” CD for a week straight now-Hank Williams is up there, but Johnny has got to be the greatest country/western artist EVER.
