Back in October, the New York Magazine did a piece on author/celebrity/songwriter JT LeRoy which supposed that the former street hustler turned darling of hip Lit may be nothing more than an elaborate fabrication by San Francisco musicians Laura Albert and Geoffrey Knoop. Yesterday the New York Times indentified the individual who publicly appeared as JT LeRoy as Knoop’s half-sister, Savannah.
Weird, huh? But wait, there’s more!
Yesterday The Smoking Gun released their investigation of the factual basis of Oprah Book Club darling James Frey’s A Million Little Pieces, the harrowing tale of Frey’s drug battles and scraps with the law (which just happened to be the 2nd best selling book of last year). Guess what? Turns out a goodly portion of Frey’s accounts of his personal hell were wholly fabricated or wildly embellished. It was also revealed that the book was originally submitted to publishers as a fiction title, not the memoir it’s been since touted as.
I bet next we’re going to find out that the Left Behind authors are just tools of some hardcore conservative Doomsday cult. Oh, wait.
