Loretta Lynn – Portland, Oregon

And now for an interesting look at a video gone wrong, courtesy of Loretta Lynn & Jack White’s Portland, Oregon from the 2004 album, Van Lear Rose.  This Oliver Gondry directed spot was rejected for a more straight-forward (but kinda boring) spot.

Which is perfectly understandable, as Gondry’s version, while an interesting idea, is so completely wrong for the song.  I can get a whole ‘goin’ round and round’ thing might seem like a good idea for this kind of song, visually it’s really flat (and not a little motion-sickness inducing).  Consider this a fairly expensive lesson in missing the point.

It looks like a workprint, or just an experiment…as if it’s just the first pass over the raw footage from the cameras. But yeah, it’s horrible, even in concept.
