Daniel Johnston – Rock This Town

As we say farewell to Syd Barret, the original rock madman who passed away on Friday, let’s not overlook his natural inheritors. Most notably, the brilliant Daniel Johnston who has somehow managed to harness his crippling bipolar disorder into a career as one of the best voices in modern music.

Unlike the psychedlic imbibing Barret (who was a darling of the London scene), Johnston came about his particular madness naturally and started out by passing out homemade tapes to anyone who’d take them.  So, if you’d like to listen to a great tune by a guy who once tried to wrest the controls of an airplane from his dad (and force them to crash), give a listen to ”Rock This Town“ As an aside, I’m glad that Johnston has seen fit to put Flash to use in using his art to further his music.

Anyone happen to catch Daniel Johnston on Henry Rollin’s show on IFC?  Pretty good performance.  I wasn’t hip to him before that (what can I say, I live in a bubble!), but it was good!  Clips?!?
