We’ve featured Joanna Newsom’s work before, but I find myself continually returning to her oddly endearing work.  Take a look and listen at ”Sprout and the Bean“.

    I still don’t like her singing voice/style/whatever.

…but i’m digging the mellow harp melodies.

had the harp stuck in my head all day today…anyone know if she plays other instruments? Other than playing the harp, I’ve only seen her sing acapella.

what is the instrument in Peach Plum Pear, one of those weird piano things? Damn, what is that called?

I’d assumed it was a harp in the high registers, but it could be a harpsichord, I suppose.

I fell in love with her after digging up more of her songs. I especially like the live music. Got her CD last week 😀

Definitely an aquired taste. I’ve never before like a singer who purposefully set out to sound like a dying cat. Awesome lyrics though.

I’d throw Perry Farrell in that category.  And then there’s the screeching barn owl category that’s home to Geddy Lee.

avesomething- hey, I found this page because I was sitting in this coffee shop in Atlanta and they were playing ys.

Reflexively searching for a sense of community to use as balm for my bleeding ears, I google searched “joanna newsom sounds like a dying cat” and found your words.

know that, somewhere out there, someone shares your thought process.

Yeah, I also fell in love with her album Milk-Eyed Mender after hearing Peach Plum Pear on this site (thanks alpha).  Her voice is really endearing if you get into it.

Either way, she’s by far the most adorable musician I’m into.  I just wanna hold her!

I don’t know if i’m allowed to mention this (and i guess this post will get axed if not =p) but there are several vids of her on youtube…including an interview chock full of silly questions (her speaking voice does not sound like a wailing cat by the way).

Why would I kill a comment that mentioned YouTube?

  • TooFarGone

No idea. Some websites have strange rules. Never seen a list of rules for posting on here. Now I know.
