baschalove hipped me onto this nugget of 70’s Bollywood genius, which actually manages to out WTF? the Bollywood Beatles clip to shame.  Is there anything better than seeing our own twisted musical excess filtered through the eyes of another culture?  I think not.  I have a scary suspicion that this clip comes from a Masala version of Shaft Meets Krush Groove, in which case my life won’t be complete until I’ve seen the whole thing.

    I don’t even understand how that’s danceable.

Actually, its a real clip from a real movie.  Its not really bollywood (Bollywood is Hindi movies from Mumbai (Bombay), while this movie is from the south).  Different language, different culture, different movie industry.

    Anyway, pretty funny smile

The ‘Bollywood Beatles’ is actually from a Bollywood movie…and in fact it was a VERY popular song back then.

So would that make this a masala film?  I wish I knew more about the culture, as it’s just always fascinated me.

Yea, well Masala movies are simply your standard movies where everyone knows the plot before they step into the theatre…and its the same plot thats playing in the theatre next door with a different movie.

This is not a bollywood movie, and I speak Hindi but not any of the southern languages…so I can’t tell you for sure.  But judging from the song, I would say that it most likely is a masala film (a southern version of one).

Bollywood only applies to the popular Hindi movies, usually made in Bombay, which are popular in most places.  These southern movies tend to be lower budget and are popular only in the south.

I think this video is in Tamil and is from the movie Ellam Inba Mayam from 1981 and I absolutely love it!

1981? Seriously?  I can’t tell you how much more awesome that makes this.  I would have pegged it at no later than 1977 or so.
