Bangkok Rock(ed)

If you’ve been following the news today, you’ll know that there’s been a (so far) bloodless military coup in Thailand, with Army Commander-in-Chief Sonthi Boonyaratkalin having stated that the military and police were under their control.  Martial law has been put into place, and the media is under tight wraps.

Why should this matter to you?  Well, for one Bangkok is still a fairly powerful economy, so instability there is bad news for most of Asia, but most importantly Transbuddha pal (and sometimes contributor) and family friend The Black Glove is currently living in Bangkok with his girlfriend.  So far what word we’ve gotten is that they’re ok, but understandably rattled.  So this post is both a ‘they’re ok’ heads up for those of us who’ve been unable to reach them, and just a way to let ‘em know I’m thinking about them.

Here’s hoping things stay bloodless and calm.

Any friend of the TB (that’s ‘buddha, not ‘burculosis) is a friend of mine.  It’s good to know they are okay cause I hear a night in Bangkok can make a hard man humble.

But seriously, I heard about this on NPR earlier and when I heard it was while the prime minister was at the UN summit I just started laughing cause I imagined “That must be really embarrasing.”

    PM:”And so in closing–”

Aide:”Ah, excuse me, Mr. Prime Minister?  I’m afraid there’s been a coup in your country.  The, ah, the military has taken over, sir.  You’re no longer in control..”

    *long silence*

PM of Sudan to PM of Laos:”Awk-waaaard…”

I would have paid good money to see that scene play out on live TV.

I’m amazed how peaceful this whole coup is going, I hope it doesn’t take a turn for the worse
