Even Stranger Pairings: Fox Gets Faith

20th Century Fox announced that it will be launching FoxFaith, a new studio division that will be releasing up to a dozen Christian themed films a year.  Not just religious mind you, but Christian.  I’m hoping they follow up with a network so I can see shows like When Disciples Attack and World’s Scariest Street Preachers.  Honestly, I could care less what Fox does with it’s resources, but I do find it intensely amusing that a company that almost singlehanded lowered the bar on what’s considered acceptable television would turn around and go for the pious buck with Christian themed movies.

This is so unsurprising.  Christianity is an absolute gold mine.  When you can make a movie that feels mandatory to watch to everyone of the main religion of a 300 million population country, how can you resist?  The Christians will pay good money to see on film the stories they already know. Hell, the churches will schedule times to get their whole congregations in.  Look at how insanely well The Passion did.  And THAT’s practically a horror movie.  Imagine how fantastic PGish family movies fully based on Christian stories will do.  It’s so transparent and the Christians will never ever realize they are totally being milked.

Rupert Murdoch is a crafty one, I’ll give him that.
