I’ll admit that it takes quite a premise to get me overly excited about an upcoming game, but Valve’s upcoming Portal (which is being bundled with Half Life 2: Episode 2) certainly seems to be doing a bang up job of whetting my discerning gaming appetite.  The actual game narrative is still pretty hush hush (the game won’t debut until first quarter 2007), but the game mechanics are based off the games semi-official predecessor Narbacular Drop, the developers of which are all now working for Valve.

Essentially, the game play revolves around using a handheld device to open portals in order to solve puzzles, navigate otherwise impassable rooms, etc.  Check out the trailer and then try to tell me that it doesn’t look cool as hell.

That’s one of the coolest concepts I’ve seen in a while, I can’t wait. Special bonus points for the phrase “If at first you don’t succeed, you fail”.

When I started the clip I was only mildly interested. By the end of it I had to use both hands to close my mouth. My lord that looks awesome and my lord inpossible. (talk about a lot of out of the box thinking along with timing and pure luck)

Man, no joke.  Every puzzle I see I’ll probably instinctively try to solve and end up slapping myself for not thinking WITH PORTALS.
