Auto Week:  Toyota Ads vs. Toyota Reality

One of the saddest losses of my self-imposed TV exile is no longer being able to watch Top Gear, the excellent auto-centric BBC series.  Co-host Richard Hammond was recently in a pretty horrific accident that occured while filming a segment for the new series, though according to reports he’s recovering nicely.  As part of our continuing Auto Week cross-over with Dragon Head Almost Destroyed Me, here’s a post from Feburary of this year in which Top Gear takes a Super Bowl ad’s claims to the ultimate test:

Toyota ran this spot during the Super Bowl to show how tough it’s Tacoma truck is.  If you look carefully, you’ll see the normal ‘don’t try this/results simulated’ disclaimer.  How much do you think that spot cost them to make and air during the most expensive air time of the year?  Probably a hell of a lot more than the $1000 that guys from Top Gear spent on a 13 year old Toyota truck that they really did sink in the tide and then drive off in.

That’s one bad-ass truck.  If that’s not enough, they also ran it through a wood building, smashed it with a crane-swung wrecking ball, set it on fire, and blew it up with a 20 story building, all of which the truck survived.
