Slade – Mama Weer All Crazee Now

Ah, yet another underrated gem of a band:  Slade put out a series of pretty kickass glam rock albums in the 70’s, but in America they’re barely even a blip on the cultural radar.  Which is odd, considering how many bands rode their formula coat tails to excess.  Hell, Quiet Riot had a massive hit with the Slade tune ‘Cum on Feel the Noize’, and most rock historians will readily admit that this foursome had a serious influence on the music that followed them.

It bears noting that Quiet Riot followed up its smash-hit version of “Cum on Feel the Noize” with an ill-advised cover of “Mama Weer All Crazee Now” on its next album. Releasing yet another Slade cover as a sinlge after having a bit hit with the first one didn’t do much for public opinion re: Quiet Riot’s originality, and the band never recovered its credibility.

Slade’s pretty cool, though. I remember when “Run Runaway” was a big hit back when I was a kid (probably due to Slade being put back in the spotlight by Quiet Riot). Canadian Celtic-rock band Great Big Sea had a hit with it about a decade after that.
