The genius of the Asylum Street Spankers from Austin, TX takes on cheap ass patriotism with this none-to-subtle song and dance routine.

Ouch!  I hate to admit it but that one hit a little close to home than I care to admit.

Man, the utter complacency in this country frightens me to a core.  And it breeds further complacency.  This is a fantastic act (not just for its catchiness and sheer hilarity) that should really be seen by everyone.  But of course, being America, everyone would just laugh and go “That’s so true!” and then go back to whatever they were doing before.  We, as civilians of a nation, don’t really give a SHIT about the world, and it’s a sad sad thing.  People see protests and coup de’tat’s in other countries and think “Wow, what terrible straits they are in, glad we’re not them.” When we should be envious of a nation of people that actually cared enough to do something about their shitty state.  *huff puff* Sorry, the poignancy of that piece really hit home.

I’ll agree with you to a point, but I think it’s important to remember that we, as citizens, aren’t asked to care about the world.  Civics are barely taught anymore, and the idea of citizen responsibility is something that’s lauded in the ‘greatest generation’, but apparently ended when Leave Room For Daddy came on the airwaves.

I think were the schools to spend more time on teaching basic civics (along with basic finances, etc) in the grade/junior high/high school level we’d have a better informed and more involved citizenry.  Of course, thanks to No Child Left Behind, it’ll only get taught as much as needed to pass that stupid standardized test.
