Goodnight, Robert Altman

Filmmaker Robert Altman passed away yesterday in a Los Angeles hospital at the age of 81.  I can’t possibly overstate Altman’s contribution to American film, as he’s responsible for some of the best (and some of most maddening) films ever produced on these shores.  M.A.S.H., Nashville, Short Cuts, The Long Goodbye, The Player, Gosford Park, A Prairie Home Companion, McCabe and Mrs. Miller are the jewels of a career that drew puzzling responses as often as genuine acclaim.  How fitting that his last film, A Prairie Home Companion, was steeped in the fear and acceptance of death.
