Squeeze – Tempted

Elvis Costello wrote it, Paul Carrack (who had recently replaced a departing Jools Holland) sings it, and you effin’ loved it.  Squeeze tears up the excellent ’Tempted‘ in this almost comically bad “live” clip.  Sadly, the utterly useless dancing girls were a terrible harbinger of the hootchie girl epidemic that ravages music videos to this day.

Elvis Costello did produce this song, but like all of Squeeze’s hits, this was written by Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford.

Oops, you’re absolutely right on that.  For some reason I thought that my vinyl of East Side Story gave Costello writing credit on Tempted, but looking at it now you’re right, it’s just the incomparable Difford and Tilbrook.  However, I do maintain that it sounds like a Costello song.

Holy crap, it’s such a great album.  I wonder what would have resulted if they’d actually gotten Nick Lowe to produce one of the other sides.
