More Paul Potts

For those of you who enjoyed Paul Potts rendition of Nessun Dorma from the other day, here’s his performance from the semi-finals last night on ITV 1’s ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ where he sung ‘Con te partirò’ and progressed to the finals by utterly sweeping the public vote.

Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that an operatic singer would never get so far on the American version?

Haha, really, an operatic singer wouldn’t make it that far in America… BECAUSE GROWNUPS DON’T WATCH THIS GARBAGE IN AMERICA.

“Just looking for someone super special, who can do something super special!”

“My granddaddy died and I vote for you to honor him!  I am crying, waaaaaaa!”

Haha, America is so depraved and lacking in culture, compared to you and your television shows that you like.  OMFG, waaaah, my granddaddy died, and Americans are stupid because they aren’t interested in European culture as much as Europeans.

I really enjoy the fact that you registered just to make that comment.  Yea for impulsive dickishness!

Yay for vapid imperceptive comeback!  Yay for cultural arrogance!  Yay for creepy European vanity!  Yay for slurring people needlessly because of where they were born!

I know it’s fashionable to disparage Americans, I understand that.  But my God the arrogance and hypocrisy!  You’re boasting cultural superiority by referencing in idiotic television show, while taking a shot at America for not prizing European cultural history as much as Europeans do.  Oh but I’m being dickish!

Let’s get a few things straight:

    #1) Born and raised American.

#2) Don’t watch television. Really and truly.

#3) It’s not a matter of a talent show being a barometer of cultural superiority, but a general sadness over how this country has seemingly given up on classical music (which is now kids music), opera (which is even more marginalized unless it gets tarted up by pop performance), and ballet (ditto).

This country seems to have an extreme aversion to any culture not generated internally, and those imports that do make it are often heavily reworked to make them more uniquely American and thereby eliminating any hint of difference.

There’s nothing wrong with celebrating our own culture, but it’s ridiculous to live in a world this small and let nothing else in.  There’s a reason we’ve long been seen as cultural imperialists throughout the rest of the world.

The world has so much to offer in terms of art, music, theater, and performance, and I find it a terrible shame that we’ve seemingly turned our backs on it.

And yes, it is extremely dickish to take umbrage at a single comment, register, and berate an author without bothering to find out anything about them, let alone their nationality.

I actually disagree that a contestant singing Opera wouldn’t make it to the finals in America.

I think they wouldn’t even make it past the first screening.

The only music/tv/movies that people notice overseas is the garbage that Hollywood pushes. I hate our pop culture shit as anyone else and I don’t watch it. There is alot of wonderful stuff if you know where to find it. Crap is on TV because alot of brain dead people watch it.
