Who Doesn’t Love Popcorn!?

No, no…not the fluffy buttery treat, but the synth driven assembly & rally staple that’s been infecting our ears since Gershon Kingsley first committed it to tape in 1969.  My first recollection of the tune would be from attending Kansas City Comets games back in the early 80’s, as the team would make their entrance onto the field with Popcorn pumping over the Kemper Arena speakers and lasers filling the smoke filled air.  Looking back on it, a team using Popcorn as their theme makes about as much sense (or is as tough) as using ’Teddy Bear’s Picnic‘, but it was the early 80’s.  Sense was no where to be found, having been obliterated by all that booger sugar.

Anyway, since the only good earworm is an earworm that you share with others, here’s WMFU’s astounding collection of 79 different versions of Popcorn, including those from Aphex Twin, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, and Kraftwerk.

Not enough variety?  Check out the ‘official’ homepage of the song, with even more variations on the synth classic.

Actually, the Comets were introduced to the theme song from the movie, Midnight Express, making you even more correct – Popcorn is not a fitting team entrance theme song!

I must be thinking of some gayrarded laser show they did pre-game or something.  I distinctly remember hearing it at a Comet’s game every time we went.

Yeah, possibly.  I think they sometimes had half time laser shows as well.  Gotta say though, as gay as it was in retrospect, I frickin loved it when I was 9.
