Tony Wilson may well have been one of the most important and influential figures in modern music, and he passed away today after losing his year long battle with cancer.  In addition to his groundbreaking attention on such young bands as the Sex Pistols (as the host of the popular music show ‘So It Goes’ ), Wilson is the founder of Factory Records, the label that introduced the world to Joy Division and the Manchester music scene as a whole.

His portrayal by Steve Coogan in the amazing film, 24 Hour Party People, is a great primer on Wilson’s life, as well as his impact on the world of modern music.  Here’s a clip of Wilson (Coogan) discussing New Order trying to soldier on after the death of Joy Division founder Ian Curtis.
