Yes, today is the birthday of Casa del Mono favorite Gene Kelly*, who would have turned 95 today had we not lost him in 1996. So let’s take a look at the man via his Broadway Melody segment from Singin’ in the Rain.
I’ve always been fascinated by this set piece, as the 12 minute long segment is so vastly different from the rest of the film, but you can tell it’s one Kelly dearly loved. He went so far as to recruit Cyd Charisse for the scene (as co-star Debbie Reynolds was not a trained dancer, but holy crap how hot is she in the ‘All I Do is Dream of You’ number?), which considering Charisse’s place among Broadway’s best is a testament to how much he wanted the segment to work.
It’s a great piece, and a wonderful showcase for the versatility and physicality that was Gene Kelly. So happy birthday, Gene.
