I still can’t make up my mind about Funny or Die, but I won’t deny that having access to some serious names (and serious money) certainly doesn’t hurt them.
I mean c’mon, Bill Murray!
Though that does raise a good point: For most original content, pieces have to succeed or fail based purely on the merit of material. With celebrity-laden sites like Funny or Die entering the mix, the balance shifts unfairly by sheer star power alone. Obviously people are more apt to watch a clip featuring Bill Murray or Will Ferrell as opposed to a couple of guys you’ve never heard of. So does a site like Funny or Die contribute to the online creators by raising awareness of good online content, or does it detract by raising the bar impossibly high for self-starters?
