Jon StewartI never thought I’d see the day, but Comedy Central and The Daily Show are making the entire 8 year archive of the Jon Stewart era available online via the Daily Show website. Now, to look a gift horse in the mouth, you can’t watch an episode from start to finish (though you can view each segment in its entirety), but I certainly applaud Comedy Central (and by extension Viacom) for finally embracing the idea that a goodly portion of the show’s audience wants to watch the show online (if to only avoid ever having to see Carlos Mencia).

The nature of the show makes it so that a compete DVD run is almost out of the question (the rights for celeb appearances and clip usage would be prohibitive), and it’s not like the show will ever go into syndication, so this marks a very forward-thinking way to keep the show’s archive alive.

Plans to add the Craig Killborn years are in the works (with a target launch of next year), and yes, The Colbert Report will get the same treatment.
