Happy Columbus Day.

Christopher ColumbusPersonally, I’d think today was cooler if it was Columbo Day (because Peter Falk is a prince of a man, in my personal experience), but I guess Columbus Day is cool, too. Oddly enough, this is one of those holidays that engenders a spirit of ‘I want to sock all my lying schoolteachers in the jaw’, as study of Christopher Columbus is rife with inaccuracies (like that whole ‘everyone thought the world was flat’ nonsense) or just conveniently glosses over the less than humanitarian acts he’s thought to have committed.

Anyway, Wikipedia delivers a pretty good summation of the man and his life, so do the right thing and get some learn on. I’m a bit fascinated by the idea that no one has ever been able to establish his nationality in any definitive sense, and that there wasn’t a single portrait of the man painted while he was still alive, meaning that most of the images we’ve seen are probably a little less than historically sound.

    From Columbus’ journal:
“they [The Arawaks]…brought us parrots and balls of cotton and spears and many other things, which they exchanged for the glass beads and hawks’ bells. They willingly traded everything they owned…They were well-built, with good bodies and handsome features… they do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance. They have no iron. Their spear are made of cane… They would make fine servants…With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do what ever we want.”

I urge you to do some exploration of the man. Listen or read things by James Loewen or Howard Zinn. They will blind side you and hit you in the head with a brick of cool ass history.
