U.S. Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) has opened investigations into the financial dealings of six mega-churches citing journalistic evidence of wrong-doing. All the churches involved preach “prosperity gospel“, which posits a god who wishes his followers to be abundantly wealthy. Apparently it’s working for the pastors, as these mega-church ministers are reaping the benefits of a congregation that turns over some 64 million dollars a year.
As yet, not a single church has complied with requests for financial information. Grassley, a conservative legislator, might seem an unlikely candidate for investigating the tax-exempt status of mega-churches, but he’s been rather diligent since 9/11 Red Cross scandal in investigating non-profits for malfeasance and financial shenanigans.
