David Mamet - Why I an No Longer a Brain-Dead LiberalWhile playwright David Mamet wouldn’t exactly seem like a go-to guy for political pragmatism, this Village Voice essay chronicles the author’s journey from (in his own words) ‘brain-dead liberal’ to free-market compromiser. It’s an interesting read, if for nothing else than to wonder at the notion of David Mamet spending most of his life believing in the innate goodness of human beings, which is kind of like finding out Fred Rogers listened to Cannibal Corpse.

The balance between liberal idealism and cynical realism is certainly a tough act to maintain, but I think it bears examination in a society that’s too invested in an all or nothing ethos.
