Slaves to Armok: Dwarf Fortress… kickin Moria's ass

Do you miss the classic ASCII games like Moria? How about you try the prequel? Well there is a new kid on the block that is using the same ASCII game play but with Sim City like complexity: Slaves to Armok: Dwarf Fortress by developer Tarn Adams.

Dwarf Fortress

You control a band of Dwarves starting up a new city: burrowing into the rocks and setting the foundation for a new kingdom. It’s kind of like Sim City, so it’s a bit like BUILDING Moria! You can never win, at some point you will be wiped out by disasters or goblins, but the game’s motto is “Losing is fun!” The point is to see how long you can hold out.

I’ve just started and don’t quite have the hang of it yet, but I think it’s going to trap me. It’s got an immensely rich set of materials and skills you need to use to set up your fortress, succeed in trade, farming, mining, and attracting new immigrants…

I like this guys description of the game being built in an alternate world, and of course the wiki for beginners will be important.
