I’ve been spending some time revisiting the soundtracks of my younger years, and one album that’s grabbed me all over again is Freedy Johnston’s 1994 Elektra release, ‘This Perfect World’, and unlike a number of revisits, it’s aged beautifully. It’s an album filled with darkness, heartache, and some deeply troubled loners, and the stories being told are a peek into a whiskey soaked world where every bad decision hangs like an anchor around your neck.
Think of it as a pop-ish singer/songwriter soundtrack to a Larry Brown novel…
I first heard of Johnston from the wonderful track ‘Fun Ride’ from the Bar None Records sampler ‘Time for a Change’ (which I’d picked up for the early TMBG singles), and while I wish there was a video I could show you for that one, I’m more than happy to share ‘Bad Reputation’, the breakthrough single from ‘This Perfect World’.
