Portraits of Artists

Henry Peters Gray from Smithsonian\'s Artist CollectionThe Smithsonian has uploaded nearly 100 photographs of artists from its archives, and for fans of the old-timey picture (not to mention muttonchops) it’s just pure heaven. Most of the photographs sit in the 1850s-1890’s range, and it’s striking just how ‘not artistic’ most of these folks look.

I really enjoy how a number of portraits stand out in that they look like they could have been taken in the last year, such as this dauguerreotype of Henry Peters Gray from 1850.

Thanks to Coudal Partner’s Fresh Signals for the find.
