Boogaloo to Beck

Boogaloo to BeckOkay, so I think we’ve firmly established I’m a Beckamaniac. However, I find it rather awesome that I can count myself in the same company as Dr. Lonnie Smith and David “Fathead” Newman, as evidenced by the 2003 release ‘Boogaloo to Beck’.

I’m usually rather anti-genre bending tribute album even when it’s a genre I enjoy tackling an artist I admire. In this case, however Smith and Newman do a phenomenal job distilling Beck’s work from One Foot in the Grave, Odelay, Mutations, Midnight Vultures, and Sea Change to their essence then filtering them through a loose and free 60’s lounge jazz strainer.

Honestly, the whole album is worth it for ‘Paper Tiger’ alone, but there are a number of really stand-out tracks. Give it a sample, already.
