From longtime ‘buddha pal Shadow comes a heads-up on on the pop that may well displace j-pop as the nerd genre de jour: F-Pop! It’s way past time our French friends across the way got a little something-something in the American love department. So stand up and give a hearty finger to Fox News (and lazy comedy writers) as you say hello to Julie Budet, (aka Yelle), a French MySpace star who parlayed a diss song into a full-blown career.
Not exactly the rise of a new Edith Piaf, I know. By all rights I really shouldn’t like this, but I think it’s the fact that she comes across as the hip-hop, French tart version of Feist that keeps me compelled. Check out the clips for “Ce Jeu“, “A Cause des Garcon” (and the awesomely dancetastic remix version) and then try to tell me you were bopping along. Admit it!
