Bettie PageYup. Pin-up queen (and the inspiration for untold goth/alterna imitators) Bettie Page has passed away at age 85 after suffering complications from a heart attack.

My own introduction to Bettie Page was via the work of Dave Stevens (who passed away in March of this year) via The Rocketeer and his iconic pin-up work. In fact, it was Stevens who brought Bettie Page out from beneath the mattress of obscurity and back into the mainstream.

Page’s good-time girl persona and giddy enthusiasm permeates the modern burlesque scene even though Page herself battled depression and often swung between repudiating her racy past and capitalizing on it’s renewed popularity, but as so often the case with imagery it’s the illusion we embrace, not the story behind it.

So g’night, Bettie Page, and thanks for your (however indirect) encouragement in helping bring fun back into the world of glamour.

Page starred in a few mainstream movies too, didn’t she?

As far as I know Page’s filmography was limited to fetish film shorts that were made during her modeling days. If she’s ever appeared in a ‘legitimate’ film, I’ve yet to hear of it.
