With all the recent advents in new technology, 3D cinema is poised to make a big splash commercially in 2009. Any animated film that doesn’t use stereoscopic images in some way will be behind the times from here on out. Even so much a hallowed classic as “Toy Story” is being reformatted in 3D for an upcoming reissue. It even looks as if some filmmakers have shed the gimmicky ideals of the 3D format and are trying to use depth as another way to tell interesting stories.
With the onslaught of 3D movies approaching (DreamWorks’ “Monsters Vs. Aliens,” the fourth 3D major release this year, is out Friday), let’s take a look back at some of the best (Or, since quality is sometimes dubious at best in this format before now, maybe ‘most memorable’ would be more appropriate?) of the 3D films that paved the way for this new renaissance.
