“Observe and Report” was #4 at the box office this weekend and it reminded me of how much better received the most subversive comedies are years down the line. When I started researching for the list, I found that that’s not always the case. Some of the most subversive movies have a huge cultural effect like “M*A*S*H*” or “Borat,” while others are too shocking to make much of a dent in the theaters, like “O&R.”
Looking at my DVDs at home, it turns out I could have written a Top 20 list of my favorite subversive comedies easily, but I had to stop at 10. That didn’t stop me from listing several runners-up. I also got a lot of suggestions on Twitter and Facebook as I was finishing up the list yesterday and have reprinted some excerpts here to get the discussion started.
