By the time I hit the office I was already bummed out thanks to the NPR report that Reading Rainbow is coming to and end (read and/or listen here).
In recent years the program has struggled acquiring necessary funding. After 26 years of teaching kids a love of reading the show and it’s host, LeVar Burton, will be closing the book for the last time today.
Only Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers have longer tenures on PBS. Though the show is leaving television it leaves behind legions of fans and a strong legacy. Over it’s years the show has taken home 26 Emmy Awards (10 for “Oustanding Children’s Series”) as well as a Peabody Award.
G’night Reading Rainbow (1983-2009)
