Jim Carrey’s career is spotty at best, but his turn as Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon shows that the man can really f’ing act when he wants to.

I heard Bob Zmuda talk about this on Adam Carolla’s podcast a few weeks ago. Jim Carrey invited Bob to his house to talk about the role and hand over his audition tape. When he got there, Jim left him in his screening room to watch some old SNL episodes with Andy Kaufman. Jim came back about ten minutes later and revealed that the “SNL episodes” were actually part of his audition tape. He’d gotten Judd Apatow to help him recreate the scenes.

Jim Carrey also talked Nicolas Cage out of sending an audition tape for the role. For some reason, Bob Zmuda really wanted Nic Cage to play Andy Kaufman.

It’s a really interesting story. You can listen to it here: http://www.adamcarolla.com/ACPBlog/2010/04/13/almost-live-podcast-12/
