The idea behind Rookie Blue, the joint venture between Canwest Broadcasting and ABC, is pretty simple: Take a group of rookie cops fresh out of the Police Academy (Missy Peregrym, Gregory Smith, Charlotte Sullivan, Enuka Okuma, and Travis Milne) and follow them through their early days on the job. My initial reaction is that the show isn’t as good as the sum of its parts. Most of the characters, at least through two episodes, are about as deep as a Family Guy episode, and the awkward romantic themes have fallen flat (some are even referring to it as Grey’s Anatomy in a police station).
I like the cast, especially Peregrym (whose character coincidentally has the same name from her last show), but I think I’d like it more seeing them all in other projects. The show is well produced and though the writing isn’t anything special it certainly isn’t worse than most network dramas. Then again, it’s not really adding anything new to a genre that’s seen more than a few cops walk the beat. I’ll give it a week or two to see if it improves (which I hope it does), but my gut feeling is this one may not make it out of its rookie season.
