scott_pilgrim_vs_the_world punchWhew. I have to admit, this was a tough one. I’m not sure if I learned more about “magic(al) realism” or if the idea of it just kicked my ass completely.

First off, it’s nearly impossible to define. Like “airness,” you either have it or you don’t. Inspired by “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” (which opens Friday), I put this list together of the Top 10 Modern Magic Realism Movies.

That is to say, these films are all fairly new and they mix the uncanny with reality in a way that leads to a greater understanding of the world and the characters that inhabit that world. Regardless of the definition (which I try again to explain in the introduction), they are all great movies, so I’m sure you’ll have a good time checking out my list of Top 10 Modern Magic Realism Movies. And, as always, if you have a Top 10 list you’d like to contribute, email me at
