The Great Songs: David Bowie – Life On Mars?

One of the best uses in cinema of a pop song occurs in Lars Von Trier’s “Breaking the Waves” where David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?” is played as the film’s epilogue over one stagnant shot.

“Life on Mars?” is a signature Bowie tune, written right in the middle of a big transition for he who would become Ziggy Stardust. I started The Great Songs as a series (inspired by Roger Ebert’s The Great Movies) that would posit an alternate classic rock canon. Most of the tunes in The Great Songs are not played on the radio, and this one is no exception.

What really excited me was the opportunity for readers to press “play” on the attached song and listen to it as they read about it. All of the past songs are listed below this entry, so check ‘em out if you want. Read/listen to The Great Songs: David Bowie – Life On Mars?
