Okay, so the first full-trailer for Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, and Tim Robbins, hit the idiot box (and internets) last night. Take a look. You’ll find my comments after the jump.
On the plus side the CGI costume looks much better in motion than early stills (yeah, it still looks ridiculous, but at least it looks better), and it appears the spirit of the character isn’t totally missing here (although it has been significantly altered). It looks like they’re going to allow Reynolds to be a bit of a cocksure jerk, though a more humorous and goofy one than the comic character Hal Jordan.
I’m still a bit concerned by some pretty awful dialogue in the little we’re shown here as well as some unnecessary changes to the character’s origin (why does Hal meet Abin Sur on the coast? Hal Jordan isn’t fearless???) and questionable changes to the character’s dynamic (like having and dynamic like Carol knowing about Hal’s new job as a space cop from the beginning).
As a huge fan of the character I’m feeling slightly better than I was before the trailer, but I’m far from feeling good about the film. It still feels like the movie has disaster written all over it, especially as we’re not let in on any of the other pieces of the plot involving Sinestro, GL’s training, or Hector Hammond, but maybe it has the chance to surprise (or at least be the kind of ridiculously fun awful flick you can almost forgive). I guess we’ll have to wait until June to find out.
