You should know the name Ken Adam. The art director was responsible for designing the the famous “War Room” for Dr. Strangelove as well as being the brain behind the original Connery James Bond aesthetic including the massive SPECTRE volcano fortress in You Only Live Twice. He also worked on The Spy Who Love Me, making him responsible for two of my favorite Bond-villain bases of all-time! His work over the years includes Agnes of God, The Ipcress File, Addams Family Values, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, Sleuth, and The Madness of King George and Barry Lyndon (both of which won him Oscars). Check out this documentary short from director Tom Haines in which Adam discusses his early life and the creation of the “War Room.”
