The fight that was promised to us at the end of the first issue is delivered in full here as the team of Annihilators (GladiatorQuasarRonan the AccuserBeta Ray Bill and Ikon the Space Knight) throw down with the Avengers (Iron ManCaptain AmericaSpider-ManWolverineMs. MarvelValkyrie, and the Thing) who have shown up to stop the alien invaders from leveling a Colorado town… by creating more violence and further leveling the Colorado town.

On the plus side the huge amount of property damage eventually reveals the Universal Church of Truth‘s secret base. The teams come to a temporary ceasefire as they are attacked by the Church’s zealots and warriors protecting a secret deep within their once hidden base.

It’s a little cliche to see two groups of heroes get into a brawl over a misunderstanding but the action is pretty good here as the Avengers give it their all but still can’t stop the cosmic guardians. There’s also a humorous moment between Spidey and Quasar when the Web-Head meets Quasar’s space girlfriend.

My only real complaint here is the Rocket Raccoon/Groot back-up story gets even more truncated than it did in the first issue. We only get five pages of the pair stuck in Mojo‘s TV studio fighting out battles for the alien’s entertainment. I enjoyed the story, and I love how artist Timothy Green II draws Rocket Racoon. I just wanted a few more pages of this story. Worth a look.

[Marvel, $3.99]

your assessment of the action and humor in this issue was pretty spot on but it’s the rr/groot (don’t care foe em!) back story that drives this title’s cost up to 4 bucks is primarily why i’m not buying it anymore.

Rocket Raccoon and Groot may not be for everyone, but I’ll admit I love ’em (especially Raccoon drawn by Timothy Green II – awesome!)

The problem with their storyline in this second mini-series is they’ve been given fewer pages. You may, may be able to put all their pages from Earthfall together and make one comic. Sigh.

The pair are getting so few pages this time around (basically less than a free preview many comic throw in for “free”), I don’t think you can blame the price tag on Rocket Raccoon and Groot as most of Marvel’s titles come with that same $4 price tag (except a few they have been relaunched to keep up with DC’s rollback $2.99 pricing such as Moon Knight and Daredevil).
