The latest number the machine delivers to Reese (Jim Caviezel) and Finch (Michael Emerson) is an out of work city employee (Myk Watford) with a family who is quickly reaching his breaking point. Things aren’t looking any better now that he has been framed for the assassination of the Congressman who pushed through the budgetary cutbacks that cost the man his job.

Finch’s attempts to trace back the fake death threats sent to the Congressman in Powell’s name accidentally allow the hacker (Rachel Miner) responsible into Finch’s network and force him to shutdown and abandon his base of operations. Meanwhile, Reese is forced to stage a prison break and abduct Powell from the FBI.

Over their heads in a world of cut-throat politicians, Finch recruits a former person of interest (Paige Turco) with specialized knowledge in local politics who helps finger the real culprit – the Congressman’s campaign manager (Damian Young).

A good episode that not only returns Zoe (Turco) but also introduces a new shadowy villain in the mysterious hacker known only as Root. I like the idea of former persons of interest showing up to help Reese from time to time and I’m glad to see Turco back for another episode. However, it’s the introduction of Root, a villain who seems to be at least Finch’s equal, that have far more impact on the remaining episodes of the season.

For me, this was a surprisingly good episode for a show I already enjoy. And with the introduction of Root, it promises more goodness down the road. This episode changes the show from a “case of the week” show to something that can have long-lasting story arcs outside of the typical “mysterious past” of our two heroes (or three, if you count Carter). Many good shows have the mysterious figure who you don’t have to explain.

My big questions are: 1) Whether this sets up Zoe Morgan for recurring character, or sets up the premise of going back and asking for favors from those they’ve helped. And 2) is Fusco getting the boot, or was he truly “working on something else” which hints to a later plotline? He’s a two-bit character, but I like him, so I hope it isn’t the former.

I agree with you, I like that they’ve added another dimension away from just the case of the week.

When they introduced Zoe they hinted at a return. I’m really hoping she’s not the only one. I’d kind of like it if they built up a network of former persons of interest that Reese might call on from time to time whenever he needed a little help in a specific area.

I don’t think Fusco’s leaving. Reese told him to investigate Finch at the end of the last episode he was in. I’m guessing when he’s shows back up he’ll have some answers for Reese, and us.

I’m giving away my age here, but in many ways this show reminds me of The Equalizer. In that show, McCall often called upon friends in his past who now owed him a favor – some were from his “past” but some had been on the show before.
