After Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) is abducted by Free Masons, Abbie (Nicole Beharie) receives a vision from Katrina (Katia Winter) who warns the detective that the Headless Horsesman (Richard Cetrone) will return by nightfall and the only hope to save Ichabod is to find the Sin Eater (John Noble) who alone has the power to severe the blood-tie that connects Katrina’s husband to one of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse. In order to accomplish the task and find the Sin Eater in under a day, Abbie enlists the help of her sister Jenny (Lyndie Greenwood) to convince the reluctant man to help find their missing friend.
Flashbacks in the episode include Crane’s first meeting with Katrina, the interrogation of a Revolutionary (Tongayi Chirisa) that led to Crane severing his ties with the British, and the first time the soldier discovered that demons walked the earth in human form. Crane’s faithful retelling of the events prove his identity to his Free Mason brothers who have been looking for his secret grave for generation in order to stop the Horseman’s rise by killing Ichabod Crane.
Ichabod chooses to sacrifice his own life to make sure the Horseman never rises, but the Sin Eater chooses to show himself before the poison takes hold to extract both it and his sins severing Crane’s ties to the Horseman for good. As the episode comes to a close the Horseman has indeed risen again. Although no longer connected to Crane, Ichabod and Abbie are still left with the herculean task of taking down Death himself who is now free of his connection to Crane for good.
Despite taking an extended break during the spookiest time of year leading up to Halloween, the show returns by putting the focus back on it’s trademark hero and villain. I’m happy to see more of Greenwood who is becoming close to series regular, and it will be interesting to see how much the Free Masons may play in the series going forward. Despite the minor victory, and the insight into Crane’s past, there’s still much to accomplish as the Horseman’s return can’t be good for the people of Sleepy Hollow.
