Although the character of Emperor Awesome (Sam Riegel) has appeared in a pair of previously-aired episodes in small roles as a rival of Lord Hater, we haven’t been given a good look at what makes the character tick until now. “The Party Animal” finds Wander (Jack McBrayer) and Sylvia (April Winchell) on a peaceful world invaded by Emperor Awesome and his Fist Fighters to throw one of Awesome’s legendary (and literal) planet-ending parties.
While trying to curb Wander’s desire to join the festivities, Sylvia disguises herself as a groupie and attempts to make her way to the stage to stop the mad Shark before his spaceship’s giant speakers rip the planet in half. With Sylvia stalled at every turn, it’s Wander’s party spirit (which turns out to be too much for the party animal to keep up with) which eventually takes the day as Sylvia unleashes Wander who quickly becomes the life of the party.
It’s good to see Emperor Awesome again and fun to see the ridiculous villain earn his own episode here. Continuing the theme presented in “The Fancy Party,” Emperor Awesome does continue to be attracted to Sylvia (although his rock star planet-destroying antics do nothing to help his cause). The episode also continues a common theme of the show where the day is saved by Sylvia allowing Wander to simply be who he is which, of course, leads to a satisfying conclusion to all involved (except the angered shark).
