The second episode of iZombie settles into the murder-of-the-week template of having a coroner’s assistant, who is actually a zombie, but pretending to be a psychic, help a police detective (Malcolm Goodwin) solve murders after eating the brains of the victim. This week those brains involve a murdered artist whose passionate nature influences Liv (Rose McIver) to begin painting as well as reconsider her very practical reasoning for staying away from her former fiance Major (Robert Buckley) so as to not accidentally zombify him as well.

“Brother, Can You Spare a Brain?” also introduces a very important supporting character as Liv meets the zombie of her dreams, so to speak, and we learn a bit more about Blaine DeBeers (David Anders) who is using his transformation in an entirely different way which will likely bring him into conflict with both Liv and the police in short order. And, based on the zombie stud’s night of passion with a total stranger, it looks like a good thing Liv has been giving Major a wide birth as the zombie state both are trapped is indeed communicable (which appears to be exactly what Blaine has in mind creating his own zombie agents around the city to facilitate his larger plans).

The introduction of Blaine gives the show another avenue to explore as well as another person who knows Liv’s secret, albeit a far more murderous one. As for the murder of the week it has some nice twists that are punctuated by Liv’s visions (which also pump up her libido enough to come onto two different murder suspects) and the show’s introspective self-deprecating humor which, along with its leading lady, continues to be one of iZombie‘s biggest strengths.
