Following the two-part cross-over with Arrow, The Flash ends the first-half of its Second Season with a trio of returning villains. The Weather Wizard (Liam McIntyre) returns to Central City to break both Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and the original Trickster (Mark Hamill) out of jail in hopes of a team-up to take down the Scarlet Speedster once and for all. While Cold bows out, but not before warning Barry (Grant Gustin) of what’s coming, the other two villains use the Christmas holiday to their advantage and are nearly able to defeat the Flash.

While the return of Mark Hamill is sure to get fans excited in an episode which feels straight out of a Silver Age comic book, the moments which will impact the season to a greater degree take place on the periphery of the Flash’s battle with the two super-villains. The episode finally sees Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) and Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears) admit their feelings for each other, the role of Earth-2’s Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) over the second-half of the season will be defined, Patty‘s (Shantel VanSanten) motivations will be explored, and Iris (Candice Patton) will let Joe (Jesse L. Martin) in on a family secret that will introduce Keiynan Lonsdale as the show’s version of one of the most important supporting characters in the Flash’s comic history. Yes, Hamill and company provide a fun winter send-off for the show’s hiatus, but just as much work is done laying the groundwork for what’s to come. I can’t wait to see where the Flash races off to next.
